Answer:

Twain uses hyperbole in this excerpt:

D. To emphasize that the arrival of a steamboat had a great effect on the town.

Explanation:

Hyperbole is a figure of speech used to emphasize an idea by exaggerating it. We use hyperbole often in our daily lives, without even noticing it. For instance, when you tell your friend you have called him a million times, you are using this figure of speech. You're exaggerating the number of times you called to emphasize the urgency of the matter.

In the excerpt we are analyzing here, Twain exaggerates his description of how hectic the town gets once the steamboat arrives. The way he describes it, there are people and goods coming and going, and screams and curses - in other words, a messy frenzy. However, once the boat is gone, the town "is dead again". As we can see, he is exaggerating the description to emphasize the effect the steamboat's arrival had on the town.

alexdok [17]

Answer:

Jack London included the detail because "it is a part of the exposition that introduces Sol-leks' characteristics."

Explanation:

The detail is an exposition that introduces Sol-leks characteristics.

 • Exposition means showing or narrating what happens at the start of the story. Generally, it talked about the background of a milieu, or a character, which in this scenario is Sol-leks.
 • The details illustrate what kind of dog Sol-leks is, what are his likes and dislikes. Because these characteristics or details will play a crucial role as the story goes.
 • As the story goes, the position of Buck and Sol-leks will be reversed. Sol-leks being afraid of Buck because of a brute strength he displayed later on.

How does Donne use the metaphysical conceit in this poem in Sonnet XIV? Do these comparisons help you as a reader to understand
alisha [4.7K]

Metaphysical conceits are not too strictly defined, but the general idea is that the poet makes use of a clever and unusual extended metaphor throughout much or all of a poem.

In Holy Sonnet XIV, the idea of the speaker as a city barricaded against God's advances is a metaphysical conceit.

Donne is really interested in physical, earthly love, but also really into God and holiness. The huge problem he must deal with is that he is trying to define a sacred, spiritual relationship, but the only tools at his disposal are the language we use and the lives we lead here in the non-sacred world. The Bible makes a big point of this the language God uses is not the language we can use, so the kinds ofcomparissons Donne can make are inherently limited. Our words and metaphors just cannot describe what happens when you get close to God. Donne writes about something he really cannot express, and that struggle is a big calling card for all of his poetry.

It is in the final couplet, that Donne describes how he 'never shall be free' unless God 'ravishes' him. This powerful image that is deemed as holy creates a paradox between purity and sin, symbolising God dominating Donne with ultimate control to become unified as one in the hope of gaining an immortal partner.

Considering John Donne's personal and professional history, Holy Sonnet XIV can also be seen as a personal processing with his own struggle with God and religion in general.

These comparison were very useful to understand the whole poem and read it in a deep way.
