Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language. Any language that goes beyond the literal meaning of words in order to furnish new effects or fresh insights into an idea or a subject. The most common figures of speech are simile, metaphor, and alliteration.
Usher tries to explain the nature of his illness; he suffers from a "morbid acuteness of the senses." He can eat "only the most insipid food, wear only delicate garments," and he must avoid the odors of all flowers.

John always wanted to be a dentist and was very determined to become one. He would always try to flatter his teachers by telling them he wanted to be a dentist. However, in the back of their mind they never believed him. One day when John woke up, there was a blizzard, so school was canceled, he was so happy. John continued studying dentistry up until 15 years later, when he turned 22, he finally became one and proved everyone wrong.
