Answer:

The policies of the Chinese government to decrease population growth have been successful.

Explanation:

China has been the most populous country in the world for thousands of years. This has become even more evident during the 20th century when the population in China experienced rapid growth and went over 1 billion. The government saw that if that trend continues the country will collapse because a population that high would be almost impossible to sustain, so it decided to implement some policies.

The policies had the purpose to decrease the population growth, and with the one-child policy in place for several decades it works very well. The policy is a little misleading as a lot of families were allowed to have a second child, especially if the first one was a girl, or if it was agricultural families where more labor force was needed in the family. Anyhow, the birthrates dropped dramatically, and even though the population continued to grow, the growth was constantly decreasing.

Now China has another problem, an aging population. In order to prevent this trend the government allowed families to have two children, but the problem is that now the majority of the families don't want to have more than one child. All in all, the policy for decreasing the population growth worked as a chram but it has created another big problem.
