We can define denotation as the literal meaning(s) of a word, the one(s) we can find in a dictionary, or simply the one that is habitually attributed to the word.

On the other hand, connotation refers to possible positive or negative associations that word may have. It is a meaning beyond the habitual one(s), a secondary meaning that demands context and interpretation to be understood.
