The literal definition of reprieve is to cancel or postpone. If prisoners from a concentration camp are hoping for a reprieve from death, that either means that they hope to escape or be sent to labor opposed to a death sentence (ie gas chambers)
George W. Harkins (1810–1890), chief of the Choctaw tribe, wrote a letter in 1831 directed to the US goverment after the brutal removals of the Indians, that were sent to new homes in the West. His latter was widespread all over the country as it appeared printed in many newspapers.
The tone of the letter was completely angry, aiming to provoke Americans who were despising the Choctaws with their actions. He described the Americans as evils who were legislating over the lives of the Choctaws without their permission or participation. He also aims that those who had oppresed the Choctaws ended up feeling guilty. He keeps on questioning the legitimacy that the Americans believe have over all the land.
