Tim Berners-Lee contributed immensely to the internet as we know it today by coming up with the World Wide Web which he did to enable scientists from around the world to share information more efficiently.

The basis for the WWW however, is an application that Mr. Berners-Lee built to help him organize his files. When it worked so well, he saw that it could have other applications as well as researched into it. Long story short, the end result was the WWW.
