The core is therefore hotter than the outer shells (with exception of the corona that is hotter than the earth's surface). The convective zone is where the sun churns due to convection currents. The cooler matter on the surface always sinks towards the core, as the hotter matter from below rises to the surface. This is akin to the convection currents in the mantle of the earth.
