A thesis in writing would be called an assertion. Usually, it is the last sentence at the first paragraph in an essay. It depends what you are writing about, but in the assertion, you state what you are trying to prove in the essay. For example, if you are writing a persuasive essay, it would be your opinion. Throughout the essay, you would have multiple "mini-assertions," with evidence to back them up.
