are all striving for in the 1920s New York. I neex textual evidence to support the what the "Dream" is. Then a definition of what it means to be great. In The Great Gatsby, the American Dream is supposed to stand for independence.It shows that one can achieve things with hard work.The underlying message of the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is that money doesn't buy happiness. Gatsby pretended that he was “the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West” just so he could fit in with people. Great to me means, a large amount of something like, "Great Wealth".The Great Gatsby is a tragic love story on the surface, but it's most commonly understood as a pessimistic critique of the American Dream. In the novel, Jay Gatsby overcomes his poor past to gain an incredible amount of money and a limited amount of social cache in 1920s NYC, only to be rejected by the "old money" crowd. He then gets killed after being tangled up with them.
