In Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that segregation between black and white Americans did not violate the Fourteenth Amendment (which granted equal rights and treatment for both black and white Americans) as long as the separate facilities were equal in quality.

This decision established the doctrine of "separate but equal", which was used by southern states to justify segregation of public facilities like schools, universities, parks, buses, or trains.
