Answer:

Before going to war with the Empire of Japan in 1941 the United States put an Oil embargo on Japan to stop further territorial expansion. During the war after Pearl Harbor, the Islands of Midway were going to be attacked until American forces found out the Japanese plans. During the Naval battle of Midway America had sunk four aircraft carriers which significantly hurt the Japanese Navy and put them on defense changing the tides of war.
