The legend says that the Crow was going down the Murray River when he found a Swamp Hawk and decided to play a trick on it.

Before enticing the bird to attack the nest of a kangaroo rat the crow had placed echidna quills on it, hoping to hurt the Swamp Hawk.

However, the quills attached to the hawk's feet, allowing an easier catch of kangaroo rats, so the trick ended up being useful.
