How did Thomas More's Utopia differ from Desiderius Erasmus' Praise of Folly?
inna [77]
Erasmus' Praise of Folly is a satire which uses a narrator and main character named Folly who is the personification of the author's contemporary world of the Medieval Ages. Folly has a deep-rooted ignorance and stubbornness which is evident for all to see. Folly is pretentious and foolish which aims to encourage and support humankind's numerous faults and shortcomings. More's Utopia pictures out a more direct solution to the times with how he depicts the manners and ways of the people from a place called Utopia. Hythlodaeus -- More's parallel to Erasmus' Folly -- has a name that literally translates to "dispenser of nonsense" is the narrator of the book.

What other images and language devices has shakespeare used here to show the conflict between hamlet and gertrude? (act 1 scene
Anna007 [38]
Shakespeare uses a couple techniques to show the conflict between Hamlet and Gertrude in this scene, irony being the one most used.

First, Hamlet speaks in an aside (meaning no one else can hear him) to indicate he's not interested in speaking to his family -- they are "less than kind."

Then, Gertrude comments on Hamlet's clothing, indicating he's mourning too much. She tells him directly to be kind to Claudius. She says people die all the time, and he replies "aye, it is common," an ironic reply. The death of a king is not "common" -- nor is murder.

Then, Hamlet discusses the meaning of the word "seem," implying that people could fake their grief. (He's implying, perhaps, that Gertrude faked her grief.) His grief, however, IS real.

Some annotations that show the strategies used by Eleanor Roosevelt are:

  • She appealed to their emotions
  • She tried using logic to convince them how important the Declaration was
  • She gave some example about people whose freedom and rights were not protected
  • What was the text about?
  • Eleanor Roosevelt was talking to UN members about the need and importance to vote for the Declaration of human rights.
  • Hence, we can see that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was later passed and this was due to the efforts of Eleanor and so many others on the United Nations member committee.
