Hildegard of Bingen or Saint Hildegard was a German Benedictine nun who lived from 1098 to 1179. She was a mystic, theologian, composer, preacher, naturalist, doctor, poet, playwright, writer and still abbess of the Rupertsberg Monastery in Bingen am Rhein. Germany. On October 7, 2012 she was named Doctor by the Catholic Church (only 4 women have this recognition).
She was perhaps the first female musician in the history of the Catholic Church, having composed 77 symphonies, in a style similar to that of the Gregorian.
