Essay about Differences Between Sparta and Athens in Ancient Greece

The ancient civilization of Greece contained many different city-states; two of these city-states were Sparta and Athens. Sparta and Athens were different in their values, politics, and societies. Sparta was focused on their military, discipline, and to have a strong state. Athens was a democratic state that was peaceful and where women were open to culture and democracy. How do these two city-states differ? Sparta and Athens were formed in two different ways. Sparta was originally four small villages in Southwestern Peloponnesus that became unified into one polis. They conquered two neighboring areas known as Laconia and Hessenia. These people were then forced to work in Sparta. Athens had established a unified polis on the peninsula of…show more content…

The reforms of Cleisthenes established the basis for the Athenian democracy. All citizens enrolled in ten tribes and each tribe chose 50 members by lottery each year for a new council of 500 people. These 500 people had the responsibility to take care of foreign and financial affairs. There was also an assembly of all male citizens, and they had the final authority in passing laws through free and open debate. In Sparta there were two kings who led the army and ruled their city-state. There were five ephors elected each year and they were responsible for the education of the youth and the behavior of citizens. There was also a council of elders that consisted of two kings and 28 citizens over the age of 60. They decided on issues to present to the assembly who were also all male citizens. There was no debate on resolution to these issues, only voting. Sparta and Athens societies and values were different as well. As stated in Document E Lycurgus, lawgiver of Sparta, did not allow Spartans to leave the city. This was done because he did not want them to adapt to foreign influences. All of these values/beliefs were based on one thing, to keep the Spartan soldiers strong and disciplined. In Athens Pericles boasts about how Athens is open to all which results in cultural diffusion. When Athens had festivals everyone except for slaves

The word “Camelot” is used to refer to the Kennedy family, and they are often referred to as “America’s Royal Family.” What does
olga2289 [7]
The word "Camelot" refers to a 1960's musical that discusses the legend of King Arthur and his court. This reference to royalty was in part due to John F. Kennedy's obsession with the play. However, this is not the only reason why the Kennedy's are referred to as "America's Royal Family."

The title of "America's Royal Family" shows how the Kennedy's were seen as social icons. Their style of dress, their way of speaking, and their charming personalities were seen as envious traits during this period. Besides their characteristics, they could also be seen as a royal family due to their political power. Joe Kennedy (John's father) was part of the federal government as an ambassador to the United Kingdom and the chair of the Securities and Exchange commission under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. John F. Kennedy would later become President after being a Congressman from Massachusetts. Bobby Kennedy (John's brother) was a US Senator and later the Attorney General (when John was president).

These are three perfect example of how the Kennedy's had a significant amount of political power, leading to their name of "America's Royal Family."
