The origin of feudalism can be traced to the crisis of the Western Roman Empire and the barbarian invasions. Feudalism was a political, economic and social system organized from land ownership.

In the feudal system, the king granted land to great lords. These, in turn, gave land to other less powerful masters, called knights, who in turn fought in their favor. He who bestowed the land was a warlord, and who received it was a vassal. Relations between the suzerain and the vassal were mutually binding, established through an oath of allegiance. When a vassal was invested in the possession of the fiefdom by the overlord, he vowed to give him military aid. The overlord, in turn, was obliged to give the vassal legal and military protection.
