The main cause of the armed conflict between Great Britain and China was related to the trade of Opium. China tried several times to stop illegal commercialization of the drug by foreign traders, among which the British played a key role.
Confrontations rose as both nations took retaliation against each other. China destroyed a large opium cargo stored in a warehouse, causing a growth of antagonism. These wars are known as 'Opium Wars'.
Jefferson actually wrote to Madison that "a little rebellion every know and then wasn't a bad thing". Jefferson saw rebellions as a way to keep governments on their toes. Small rebellions were good in that they would keep the government honest. They would need to address what caused the rebellion and hopefully make the government better.
