Maryland, a colony founded as a safe haven for Catholics, have so many protestants living there by the 1640s because Maryland was seen as business state and many protestants came to like there for business.

Further Explanation:

The religious toleration act which was also known as Maryland Toleration Act was a law which was made to mandate religious tolerance for Trinitarian Christians. This act was passed in the year 1649 after many protestants came to Maryland in order to do business and this caused discomfort among Catholics. This law was the second bill which was passed in the case of religious tolerance that was taking place in British North American colonies and when that law was passed, It achieved special status which was passed by the legislative body of a colonial government and it was made to guarantee any degree based on religious guarantee. This bill guaranteed conscience to all the Christians. Not only this act guaranteed conscience to all Christians but also sentenced death to anyone who were against and denied divinity of Jesus. This act was revoked in year 1654 when William Claiborne was made as commissioner of Maryland. He followed Anglican and he was a Puritan sympathizer. He was strongly hostile to Catholic Religion. But when his term got over and new commissioner took charge, this act was again implied. This act was repealed permanently in 1694 after glorious revolution and protestant revolution which took place in Maryland.

The colony of Maryland was indeed founded to be a safe haven for presecuted Catholics.

Since the 1530's when Henvy the VIII broke off from the Roman Catholic Church, many Catholics in the British Empire were seen with suspicion and often presecuted.

George Calvert and his family members established the colony of Maryland to not only turn into a land development investment but aslo help to provide a safe place for Catholics to practice their religion.

However, since the colony of Maryland was a business investment at a strategic location, people from all walks of life began to settle there.

This lead to flaring tensions and by 1649, the Colony was forced to pass a law for religious tolerance, the first of its kind in the colonies.
