B. Moved by extreme pity for him
Explanation:
The way Douglass describes the fugitive is sorrowful. He uses the words/phrases "merciful," "perfectly helpless," "suffering," "terrible gnawings of hunger,"..... These all lead to the conclusion that Douglass feels extreme pity for him.
So, the answer would be "B. Moved by extreme pity for him."

It would give the mother and father depression, causing them to be too sad for work. They’d cry on their papers and probably refuse to do them. Then they’d get fired, and would’nt get a payment. Without money, they can’t pay taxes or bills, so they get kicked out of their apartment or home. Then they’d become homeless, and an aunt, uncle, or grandparent would have to take care of them and let them live with them, but handling people with depression would be too difficult, causing the relatives to overwork, not getting enough sleep.
How I would feeling peace again is probably playing more video games. I just get up when I get knocked down. I don’t really cry for others.
