When a muscle cell demands energy to contract, what happens to ATP? a. ATP makes more ATP b. ATP is hydrolyzed and turned into A
MrRissso [65]

Answer: B) ATP is hydrolyzed and turns into ADP.

ATP ( adenosine triphosphate) is required in the process of muscle contraction. There are two proteins which make up the thin and thick filaments of muscle namely Actin and Myosin respectively.

Myosin head has ATP binding sites. ATP hydrolysis releases large amount of energy which is utilised in the formation of cross-bridge between Actin and Myosin. This eventually leads to the shortening of the sarcomere ( unit of muscle contraction) which results in muscle contraction.
