While Jerusalem is a major pilgrimage site for Muslims, it also holds great value to Jews and Christians. On the other hand, the Mahabodhi Temple Complex is one of the holiest places of Buddhist pilgrimage in the world and is also considered the place where Buddhism started.

While Bodh Gaya holds a descendant of a Bodhi tree that Buddha allegedly sat next to on his path to enlightenment, The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is believed to have been built around the summit of Mount Moriah where Abraham sacrificed Isaac and Adam was allegedly buried. At the same time, it has been linked to the Ascension of the Prophet Mohammad in the Islamic tradition.
