How does Edmundson characterize today's typical college students-physically, intellectually, emotionally?

English
1 answer:
Semenov [28]3 years ago
6 0

Explanation:

Physically: Edmundson describes them as consumerists, students who only think about satisfying their physical needs, such as studying in a large classroom, having good cafeterias at the university, and they just want to spend it comfortably in the universities.

Intellectually: Edmundson describes them as conformists, they only feel satisfied with what the instructor tells them or with what they can learn, they only want to "find pleasant experiences" but do not want to deepen their knowledge, they do not demand of themselves, to be better, to innovate and share new knowledge, Edmundson also describes a very common reality in many young university students, they like reading very little.

Emotionally: Edmundson describes them as emotionally egocentric, that is, they only think about their comforts in living well and enjoying the comforts they can get from others, but they do not think about the importance of being better every day, in overcoming their own skills and knowledge. , nor in the possibility of really bringing innovative and surprising things to the world.

deff fn [24]

Read this excerpt from the Cherokee creation story "How the World Was Made":

When all was water, the animals were above in Galûñ’lati, beyond the arch; but it was very crowded, and they wanted more room. They wondered what was below the water, and at last Beaver’s Grandchild, the little Water-beetle, offered to go and see if he could learn. He darted in every direction over the surface of the water, but could find no firm place to rest. Then he dived to the bottom and came up with some soft mud, which began to grow and spread on every side until it became the island that we call Earth. It was afterward fastened to the sky with four cords, but no one remembers who did this.

At first Earth was flat and very soft and wet. The animals were anxious to get down, and set out different birds to see if it was yet dry, but they found no place to alight and came back again to Galûñ’lati. At last it seemed to be time, and they sent out the Buzzard and told him to go and make ready for them…

When Earth was dry and the animals came down, it was still dark, so they got the sun and set it in a track to go every day across the island from east to west, just overhead…

how does the poem, When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer, connect to the principles of transcendentalism?
vazorg [7]

Answer:

Explanation:

In Walden, one of the many Transcendental concepts Thoreau expressed is the idea that God does not exist in some far away place, but lives instead all around us. "Heaven," he wrote, "is under our feet as well as over our heads." As a Transcendentalist, Thoreau believed that God manifests Himself in the natural world; therefore, nature lives as the source of spiritual truth for those who will seek it there. The poem's persona is one such person.

After listening to the astronomer analyze and "explain" the universe with his charts, diagrams, and mathematical formulas, the poem's speaker becomes "tired and sick." He leaves the stifling atmosphere of the confining lecture room and goes out into "the mystical moist night air."

The influence of Transcendental philosophy can be seen in the contrast between the attitudes and values of the lecturer and those of the poem's speaker. The astronomer intellectualizes nature, perhaps even brilliantly. He is very intelligent, but he is not wise. He understands facts, but he misses truth. The poem's speaker, however, understands that the truth of the universe, of nature itself, can only be understood spiritually. Rejecting the astronomer's carefully reasoned "proofs," he seeks truth instead by "[looking] up in perfect silence at the stars."
