In chapters 30-31 Thomas Jefferson refines the central idea of the declaration of independence by showing that this declaration is being established because the colonies are tired of making requests that are met with more repression and exploitation. It is possible to realize this, when the author states that "In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress ..."

In addition, the author states that this repression is the result of a way of barring the strength of a territory as promising as those of the colonies and it is precisely because of the strength they have, that the colonies are declaring themselves independent from the British crown. It is possible to see this statement through the phrase "... That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved ... "
