The powerful river causes erosion through hydraulic action as the force of the water buts pressure on the rock. Cavitation occurs when the river traps air in cracks in the rock to weaken it. Sediment carried by the rock can also speed up the erosion process by being used as a tool to scrape on the channel floor. This is known as abrasion. Some chemicals may be dissolved through a solution. This would cause vertical erosion on the original course of the river causing it to continuously move down and leave a canyon.
