This meant that <em>there was no lack of labor even after the war</em>. These free slaves started working on lands again through the <em>sharecropping system.</em> This allowed the black people to rent a small area of land from a landlord. When harvesting day comes,<u> the sharecropper would give a portion of his harvest to the landlord.</u> This happened in the early years of the Reconstruction period.
