In Ancient times, sickness was thought to be caused by an excess of blood. Therefore, doctors would cut into their patients and let some of the blood out to help cure them. This theory advanced into thinking that the human body needed all of its "humors" to be balanced: blood was one of the humors so if the doctor thought you had an imbalance, they would 'let' some of the blood out.

Rukmani is the narrator and protagonist of the novel. She recalls with clarity and unflinching honesty the choices and decisions that have brought her both joy and despair. Her father taught her to read and write, and she later passes these valuable skills on to her children. She a great love for beauty and the land. She is not bery beautiful herself but, she is loving, hardworking, thrifty, and patient. She can also be violent when pushed too far.
Kenny is doctor who ministers to the people in the village. There was a moment when Kenny had helped Rukmani overcome her infertility, which made her forever grateful, and the two then became friends. Kenny is mysterious, private, moody, and sometimes sharp-tongued, yet he does what he can from time to time to help Rukmani’s family. He is tall and gaunt and his eyes are the color of a kingfisher’s wing, neither blue nor green!
