  The Mexican National Era is when Mexico gained independence from Spain. Mexican independence from Spain was the result of a long struggle against the former superpower of the 'New World.' The desire for freedom was part of a series of revolutionary movements spanning the globe in the nineteenth century and forever changing the world. Following a violent struggle, the Spanish leader in Mexico, or Viceroy, resigned. Mexico proclaimed its independence on September 27, 1821.
