In the book, it doesn’t state what happened to his mother. The only information that’” was given was Winston recalling the last memory of his mother. That memory being him stealing the last piece of chocolate rations from his little sister and running off. Later when returning home, he found them both gone, supposedly taken by the Party.

Answer:

At the very beginning of the book, on page 31, Winston has a dream about his mother. In the dream, his mother and sister are sitting in some deep place, drowning. He has a feeling that his mother has sacrificed herself and her daughter of him, and that he could not save them.

What are some examples of word choice that convey the setting of this story?
qaws [65]
One thing interesting about the setting in the short story "Through the Tunnel" is that author Doris Lessing carefully uses word choices to show the striking contrast between the beach and the enticing rocky bay, and the contrast helps set the mood of the story and develop the major theme.

What is a common theme in many of Franz Kafka's stories?
Vera_Pavlovna [14]

In many of Franz Kafka's stories, he utilizes the theme of (C) Alienation.

He talks about alienation from society, from others around us and even from our true self. He sees society as something which alienates us from our own selves and does not serve as a sustenance to nourish our true identities.
