The expansion of markets and industry to a global scale has meant that many manufacturing jobs that previously were done in the United States now are handled in other countries with developing economies and workers eager for industry jobs. The US has shifted from a mostly manufacturing economy to a mostly service economy. In 1990, more workers were employed in manufacturing than in any other sector of the economy in 36 states. By 2014, manufacturing was the primary form of employment in only 7 states.
