Esoteric means that only a small number of people know what it means. (Kinda funny now that I look at the situation)
For example,
The debate was esoteric
Which is basically saying,
The debate wasn't able to be understood by many people.
If we are talking about the airplane terminology, to to take off means to leave the ground, to start flying. So, the opposite of that verb would be to land.
