Os meridianos são as linhas imaginárias dispostas verticalmente sobre o globo terrestre, formando semicírculos, ou seja, curvas que representam a metade de um círculo. Como todos os meridianos possuem o mesmo tamanho, não há diferenças técnicas entre um e outro, o que fez com que o meridiano principal fosse escolhido por meio de uma convenção realizada em Washington D.C. no final do século XIX.
