In Rome, captured, fit, male slaves from other "barbarian" armies, were typically sent to gladiator school, and then to the Arena to fight each other. They were commonly known as gladiators, and fought for the public's entertainment, as well as for their own freedom, if they were to survive long enough to be able to do so.
