Mobutu is one of the best known leaders of Africa, unfortunately not for good. He managed to gain control of the country through coups and military power, overthrowing the democratically elected officials. He was able to do so because the likes of the US, France, Belgium supported him.

Once Mobutu became the leader of DR Congo, he changed the name of the country to Zaire. He executed his political opponents, and committed countless crimes against humanity, but all of that was tolerated by the West because they were allies. During his reign, Mobutu was a textbook dictator, ruling with iron fist, obtaining enormous wealth, and eliminating anyone that was standing on his way.
