What is an example of allusion in The Great Gatsby?
Morgarella [4.7K]

An example of allusion in The Great Gatsby is a reference to Midas, Morgan, and Maecenas when Nick describes his aim of learning about finances.

Allusions are a literary device that refers to a place, person, event, thing, and literary work to express huge meanings into one word or phrase. Allusions are helpful for a writer when it is familiar to the readers or else they could be misunderstood and ruin the impression and meaning of the writing.

An example of allusion in the statement of Nick Caraway is "I bought a dozen volumes on banking and credit and investment securities, and they stood on my shelf in red and gold like new money from the mint, promising to unfold the shining secrets that only Midas and Morgan and Maecenas knew".

The example of allusion, given in The Great Gatsby, explains that Nick is aiming for upward mobility by learning the finances. He is trying to make a career in finance and hoping for skills as good as Midas who converted everything into gold with his touch.

The reference to Morgan and Maecenas explains that Nick wants to be an expert in finances like JP Morgan in the American finances in the late 19th and early 20th century. He alludes to Maecenas who was an advisor to the first Roman emperor and patron to poets like Virgil and Horace.

What's the difference between weaving and embroidery
Bumek [7]

Difference:

When weaving, a loom is used in order to keep the warp threads in place. There are filling threads woven through them and voila! The woven cloth is created. Now, on the other side, embroidery refers to the process of decorating the fabrics in artistic ways.

Ps. You can search this up!

-Hope this helps you!!! :D

A harder way to read, if u like reading:

The term Embroidery includes different fabrics. Both needlepoint and cross stitch are types of Embroidery. Its basic definition is “decorating of fabric and other materials by stitching designs”. This can be done with thread, yarn, or ribbon. There are embroidery subcategories. Machine Embroidery is done with a sewing machine. Free Embroidery is done without taking the weave of the fabric into account. Surface Embroidery is done on top of the fabric. Embroidery roots are uncertain but there is a sign that proves that it goes back at least as far as the Iron Age. Detailed Embroidery designs in clothing were a sign of status in very old times. Different forms of Embroidery have been passed down through the generations in many cultures. Weaving is a method of fabric production in which two separate sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. Almost the same methods are knitting, felting, and braiding or plaiting. The related threads are called the twist and the lateral threads are the weft or filling!!! :D
