Although it does depend on the teach and university, it will prepare anyone for success. It will help them get enough knowledge about there job which you need in order to succeed.
It seems to me that the two forces struggling when the narrator bites back her tongue are Meimei vs. self. This meaning, the narrator is battling herself, her Meimei self. Her family called her that way because she was the youngest sister. It seems to me that is a battle against her childhood, her attempt to be or, at least, act as a grown up. Her mother is telling she to restrain her childish whim.

Shadow falls on the moon.
Moon becomes dark.
Anybody on Earth who can see the moon sees it become dark.
<u>Solar eclipse:</u>
Shadow falls on the Earth.
A small spot on the Earth becomes dark.
People who happen to be inside that small spot see darkness for a few minutes.
(They see the sun become dark in the sky.)
