Edgar Allan Poe uses chronological events in "The Black Cat" in order to show the curve of transformation the narrator suffers through the story. At the beginning he used to like the cat very much, but after certain events that happen to him and that lead him to commit certain actions, he starts hating the cat.
Without the chronological events, the story would be very difficult to understand and we wouldn't be able to understand his internal motives to do something like that to the animal he used to love.

When she got to the house, she was told “First when I am home, you must help me with the cooking and cleaning around the house. When I am traveling, you must accompany me to help carry mt things. In return, you shall have enough to eat and have a small allowance each month. As the story goes, even at birth, that old matchmaker, God in heaven, ties an invisible red string around the foot of a boy and a girl destined to spend their lives together as husband and wife. No matter the distance or the circumstances, nothing can break this string.” A cople of weeks passed by and a matron came and knocked on the door when Ju-Lin opened the door there was a disgruntled matron. He came inside he talked to Moi-Yun saying “my son is stubborn, and he will not take any women in marring. None of the women in the five naborhoods do not meet his requirements he wants a woman with long peasant feet, and I need someone to tell his there is no women to meet his requirements. So, Ju-Lin the next day went off on her journey to talk to the boy. When she made it, the son just got back from a walk. The matron said "my son, I told you your expectations were unreasonable! Now you will hat to listen to the words of the most respected moi-yun of all five provinces. She couldn’t come in person, but you will hear from her assistant. You should pay close attention, for I have gone through a lot of trouble to moment, but I shall be back shortly.” And she gave him advice and change his lower his expectations.
I think this story is trying to say never have to high requirements or you will not get what you want. I think that the way the story updates the character type or story pattern means you must change.
