Finally, the north won the war, thanks to a strategy of total war carried out mainly by William T. Sherman and Ulysses Grant, who divided the Confederate territory, isolating the different units of the southern army and, once the Mississippi River was controlled, preventing key places for the Confederation such as Texas, Georgia or the Carolinas from being supplied with troops and resources, economically annihilating the rebels and, as a consequence, also defeating them in battle.
