Answer: Because the love of his life and newlywed wife Eurydice had died.

Explanation: After Orpheus and Eurydice got married she was pursued by Aristaeus who eas a minor god of the arts. While evading him she stepped on a snake and died. This prompted Orpheus to go down to the Underworld to try and bring her back to life.
