1 THERE was no use in arguing with a person like this. I promptly put such a strain on my memory that by and by even the shoal w

ater and the countless crossing-marks began to stay with me. But the result was just the same. I never could more than get one knotty thing learned before another presented itself. Now I had often seen pilots gazing at the water and pretending to read it as if it were a book; but it was a book that told me nothing. A time came at last, however, when Mr. Bixby seemed to think me far enough advanced to bear a lesson on water-reading. So he began—
2 "Do you see that long slanting line on the face of the water? Now, that's a reef. Moreover, it's a bluff reef. There is a solid sand-bar under it that is nearly as straight up and down as the side of a house. There is plenty of water close up to it, but mighty little on top of it. If you were to hit it you would knock the boat's brains out. Do you see where the line fringes out at the upper end and begins to fade away?"

3 "Yes, sir."

4 "Well, that is a low place; that is the head of the reef. You can climb over there, and not hurt anything. Cross over, now, and follow along close under the reef--easy water there--not much current."

5 I followed the reef along till I approached the fringed end. Then Mr. Bixby said--

6 "Now get ready. Wait till I give the word. She won't want to mount the reef; a boat hates shoal water. Stand by--wait--WAIT--keep her well in hand. NOW cramp her down! Snatch her! snatch her!"

7 He seized the other side of the wheel and helped to spin it around until it was hard down, and then we held it so. The boat resisted, and refused to answer for a while, and next she came surging to starboard, mounted the reef, and sent a long, angry ridge of water foaming away from her bows.

Which BEST describes Mr. Bixby's influence on the narrator's learning how to "read" the water?

A) Mr. Bixby is a cruel taskmaster, forcing the narrator to do his bidding.
B) Mr. Bixby is an apathetic teacher, reluctantly instructing the narrator.
C) None of these represent an accurate description of Mr. Bixby and his teaching.
D) Mr. Bixby is a confident teacher, trusting that the narrator is ready to learn.

Which two excerpts use the third-person limited point of view?
Lemur [1.5K]

❤️Hello!❤️ The third-person limited POV uses words like he/she and his/her to tell the story and refers to the characters by their names. The narrator does not take a part in the story and tells it from an outside perspective. However, because it's 3rd person limited, you know the thoughts/feelings of a single character.

Go through each excerpt and figure out which ones are 3rd person and which ones use a limited POV.

All the excerpts use 3rd person because you don't see an "I/we" (1st person) or a "you" (2nd person), and they all use "he/she/her/him/names of characters."

However, only two excerpts let you into the mind/thoughts & feelings of one character. In B, you can hear the character, the man, conclude that "It certainly as cold," which is something you would not know unless you knew the thoughts of the character. In C, you can hear that the man "was disappointed at first that she had not put on something more elaborate" and that "he had rather expected that a butler would announce dinner." These are also things you would have not known without a limited POV. Also notice that only one character's thoughts are heard and you can't hear the thoughts of the dog in B or Judy Jones in C.

Your answers are B and C. Hope this helps! ↪️ Autumn ↩️

Rewrite this section of the story to better establish Mr. Valentine as a complex character?
SpyIntel [72]

Answer:

The passage has been re written using same old sequence but added new words that can intensify the character of Mr Valentine

Explanation:

Suddenly at 8:00 a.m., the doorbell rang. Paul walked to the door to see who rang the bell. When he opened the door, he discovered a short heightened, withered, white-haired man staring up at him with piercing blue eyes.

"Mr. Candor?" the man said in a voice that was much larger than he was. The voice was like there were more men speaking behind him. He started at me and then the home as if he was some investigating agency agent. He was carrying a bag which looked like a tool bag to me

"Uh, no, sir. My father isn't home right now" replied Paul.

"Mr. Paul Candor is who I'm looking for," said the man. "Is that you?"

"Oh, yes, sir. That's me. You must be my tutor," said Paul.

"Yes, I'm Mr. Valentine. Let's get to work."
