When the people have descent living and are happy they would not go to extremes because of some politician's ideology. And taken in consideration that the Germans followed Hitler mostly because they were living in terrible conditions and were desperate, this seems to be the best possible move.
True, the communistic economic system encourages public good, and "everybody being equal". However, that left many people unhappy, as their lifestyle and amount of money earned dropped drastically, and they do not have the freedom to choose what they want to do and what they don't want to.
