Entre estas culturas de la época precolombina sobresalieron tres por su legado literario, los mayas en Guatemala y Yucatán, los aztecas en México, y los incas en Perú, y su legado no es solo literario, también fueron artistas admirables en (templos, palacios, cerámicas, tejido, esculturas, pinturas, orfebrería y tallas en madera). Se asume que esta literatura de desarrollo en paralelo a la evolución de estas grandes civilizaciones y era de carácter eminentemente oral.
