But Boyan Slat, a 19 year old student from TU Delft , came up with an invention designed to clean up the trash gyres. Slat’s invention uses long booms that float on the water and use the ocean’s natural currents to direct trash into a processing platform. Slat reports that the Arrays could remove 7,250,000 tons of plastic waste from the oceans, and clean up an entire trash gyre in five years.
