This was true of any English colony, as they were deemed of a lesser government status compared to citizens of England itself. While the English crown was likely justified to increase taxes (to pay for the seven years war), they did so without asking the colonists. Instead, the taxes were raised almost as if overnight more or less. This increased the cost of a lot of goods, which angered the colonists.
