Andrews [41]

Answer: B

Explanation: Douglass is not sad to leave the plantation, as he has no family ties or sense of home, like children usually have. He also feels he has nothing to lose, because even if his new home in Baltimore is full of hardship, it can be no worse than the hardships he has already seen and endured on the plantation.

forsale [732]
The correct answer is D. noun clause.
The clause Maria was not going to show up cannot be independent because it depends on the first part of the sentence. What did Tony realize? - That Maria was not going to show up.
Since it doesn't describe a noun or a verb, it cannot be an adjective/adverb clause either.

Otrada [13]

Answer:

Brooks attacked him as retaliation for a speech Sumner had given just two days prior that criticized the people who still held slaves which included Brooks relatives. The beating was so severe that it nearly took Sumners life. This drew harsh criticism from the public when it came to expanding slavery in the US.
