Great Britain is an excellent example of this with its emergence as a major naval power. This should not come as a surprise when taken into account that it is an island nation we are talking about.

Being an island nation, Great Britain of course had access to the sea. Not just that, but it naturally had excellent sites for ports and an abundance of high-quality timber for the production of ships. This was used to the maximum, and the country focused on developing the best naval fleet of its time. This resulted in excellent defense by countries from mainland Europe, explorations, conquering of new territories, developing a global empire, taking down the competition, etc. Great Britain managed to become the wealthiest country in the world because of the efficiency of its navy, and it is the country that managed to create the largest empire the world has ever seen.
