Describe how social categories, roles, and practices have changed since 1900.

The last 120+ years have been some of the most important decades for the history of humanity. Technology has rapidly evolved, wars have erupted, and social norms have transformed tremendously. A large majority of the globe has stamped out segregation of race and gender, and have become generally accepting of all ideals that had been seen as taboo many decades ago. One example of a social norm change is the fact that segregation is no longer practiced in most, if not all, countries across the globe. Through political campaigns, protests, and even riots, the social norms of the eighteenth century and nineteenth century changed from segregation to integration. Another example of how social norms have changed is the fact that women are no longer expected to serve as traditional housewives, and can now be independent without being outcast by society. Social norms are still changing even nowadays, allowing America to be even freer than it was during the 1900s.

Answer:

There have been many different social hierarchies over the ages. In India there was the caste system which came from traditional Hindu beliefs. They believed that it was impossible to change your caste and you job and role in society was based off of your caste and Jati which was a section within the caste. In Sparta, the soldiers were at the top right under the generals and elders. This was because of the importance and value placed on the military and fighting men. At the beginning of the founding of Sparta, there was a slave revolt and the Spartans vowed it would never happen again, so they took their military to the next level so that the slaves could never revolt again.

-development of railroads (especially railroads that made it easier to move, transported materials & trade) new technologies and innovations like steamships, spinning jenny, cotton gin... etc...
-people in many parts of the world started moving to the US for better opportunities

this led to people from diff parts of the world to migrate to the US (better to write about for late 1800s):
-extreme hardship
-war
-lack of economic opportunities/high unemployment
then theres new places (such as the US) where your overhear about:
-more jobs
-promise of a better life
