In "Was It a Dream?" the narrator describes the terribly grief he is experiencing over the death of his lover. We learn that the woman was in love with him, and he was in love with her. However, she went out in the rain and caught a cold which sent her to her grave.
The speaker is heartbroken and he wanders around her tomb. However, as he is sitting there, he sees a vision. Many spirits rise from their tombs and change their epitaph to something that is more honest. When he looks at the lover's grave, he discovers he went out in the rain to cheat on him.
In these way, the author communicates some of his feelings about love relationships. He conveys how difficult and painful grief is. He also tells us how deep love can be. However, the author also highlights how humans can be deceitful and how something as beautiful as love can be false and corrupted.
