Both the characters in the story “The Devil and Tom Walker” by “Washington Irving” are very greedy. Tom is selfish and his wife is very harsh. They behave horribly with each other and have a miserable marriage.
Being insensitive by nature, both of them hide their valuable possessions from each other. They constantly argue and sometimes fight even physically. This is the reason Tom doesn’t fear about the devil as he already lives with a nasty wife. Both are ready to sell their souls to devil for wealth.
Determination Despite Adversity. Ellen must continually overcome terrible hardship—sexual abuse, alcoholism, neglect, poverty, cruelty. Throughout it all, however, she is determined to endure and knows that she deserves better than the horrific circumstances under which she is suffering.
