The Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was organized in 1873 and held its first national convention in 1874. It was devoted to the cause of "temperance," which in general means moderation in regard to eating and drinking, and specifically tends to refer to staying away from drinking alcohol. The group had other issues of social reform they wanted to see enacted, but their main concern was addressing alcohol consumption. The WCTU played a significant role in bringing about the 18th Amendment to the Constitution in the US, which prohibited the production and sale of alcoholic beverages. The 18th Amendment was ratified in 1919 ... but was later overturned by the 21st Amendment, in 1933.
