Why do you think people settled what is now British Columbia before settling thse prairie provinces
mars1129 [50]

The people settled in British Columbia first because they had easier access to the ocean, as well as a natural barrier that stopped them to settle into the interior.

Explanation:

The first settlers in what is now Canada settled the coastal areas, but not the interior of the country. There were several reasons for this, some of which much more important than others. Basically, the Europeans settled the areas that now comprise:

  • British Columbia
  • Quebec
  • Labrador

The two main reasons for this pattern of settling, specifically for British Columbia, were the easy access to the sea, and the natural barriers. Having access to the sea was crucial, as supplies were always available, the trade goods were easy to be sent with the ships, and military assistance was always faster through the sea. It's the case that the people didn't wanted to settle in the interior though, where the prairies are, but the problem were two mountain ranges that were standing on their way. The Coastal Range was a problem, though not as big, but the Rocky Mountains were too tough and too risky for passing, so naturally the people avoided that until they were equipped with better technology to do so.
